Successful horse problem fixes...slow down to get best results Many of the horse problems that people experience like rearing, shying, bolting, kicking and the likes can be the results of a conflicted and confused horse. If a horse has a problem the only way they can let someone know is by acting "naughty". One of the secrets of effective training or fixing a "broke" horse is slow everything down. As prey animals, the horse has an instinctive need to monitor and understand all that happens around them. By understanding the little things that happen around them, they can tell if they should be a afraid and run away or relax and stick around. When confused they will immediately become fearful and have a tendency to bolt and shy. Slowing down all our interactions will give them the opportunity needed to interpret and understand what it is we want. It gives them the chance to read our body language, understand cue sequences and file away everything, correctly, for future reference. Slowing down also allows us to become superior communicators. It allows us to separate cue sequences into simple steps that the horse can easily achieve and remember. We become readable to the horse. When we initiate a cue sequence like picking up the reins for a stop, or sliding the leg back for a leg yield the horse immediately understands what is coming next and will immediately give the anticipated response. Slowing down is not easy. While the concept is simple the application is difficult, especially if there is a time frame or agenda. But it is the fastest way to train a horse, there is no other method that can replace a slow methodical approach to communicating with your horse.
